Syracuse University Noontime Running League Rules of Competition (Last Revised: February 28, 2019.) Individual Competition. Records are kept of the best times for each person. Age categories are as follows: 5 and under,6,7, 8-9, 10-11 ,12-13, 14-15, 16-17, 18-19, 20-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65 -69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84,85-89, 90-94, and 95+ (Additional age groups may be added as needed.) Points are given both for participating (participation points) and for achieving certain standards (achievement points) in the following events: 100 meters (or 55m) 200 meters 400 meters 800 meters One mile (or 1500m) 3000 meters 5000 meters 10000 meters (or 8000m or 5 miles) 15000 meters ( or 10 miles, 1/2 marathon, or marathon ) 800 meter relay (or 4 x 1 Manley relay) 1600 meter relay (or 4 x 2 Manley relay) 3200 meter relay (or 4 x 3 Manley relay) A score for the 55m dash may be substituted for the 100m dash score, with only the higher of the two counting toward the individual and team scores. Similarly, a score for the 1500m run may be substituted for the mile run, and a score for any of the 10 mile, 1/2 marathon, or marathon runs may be substituted for the 15000m run. A score for the 8000m or 5 mile runs may be substituted for the 10000m run. Similarly, scores for the 1,2, or 3 lap per leg relays - when scheduled in Manley Field House as a regular league event - may be substituted for scores in the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m standard distance relays respectively. Team Competition Runners will be divided into teams. Each year, during the fall semester, a draft will be conducted to choose the teams. This will be done in conjunction with a party at one of the local establishments. The team selections will be binding for one year only. The team accumulating the greatest number of points at the end of the year shall receive an award. (The number of teams may be changed as needed in response to changes in league participation.) The draft procedure is as follows: Captains will select in reverse order of the number of points they scored the previous year not including relay points. Number 1 has the first selection; number 2 has the second selection, etc. This order of selection is then repeated until all available runners have been selected. (Changes to the draft procedure shall be made at the awards banquet so that prospective captains know where they will stand in the draft.) The "commissioners" will attempt to coerce runners into becoming team captains. Captains will change each year, and will have the following responsibilities: - Think of a clever name for your team. - Make your draft selections. - Provide the commissioners complete information on any team members added after the draft. - Encourage participation. Eligibility Those eligible are: 1. All runners who are not students (grad or undergrad) at Syracuse University or the SUNY College of Forestry. 2. Any student who participated in a minimum of four timed runs on four different dates during our official timed runs in one of the two previous running years. 3. Each team may add to its roster a maximum of five students who are not current varsity athletes who do not otherwise satisfy the eligibility requirement in 2 above. 4. All runners must participate during four of our "official timed runs" on four separate days before his/her times count for a team. Prior to the fourth timed run, that person will be recorded as a reserve runner and will be considered a "protected player" for his/her team. 5. In cases where a relay team is made up of some reserve runners and some regular team members, the scores of the regular team members will count toward the team score. 6. Steve Nix, Dick Coleman, and Lennie Tucker are "honarary SU faculty members for life" in this program. 7. Others are encouraged to participate; we will keep track of your individual performances, but you will not be placed on one of the noon time teams. Procedures 1. Events of shorter than one mile must be run on a track. When submitting times for 1 mile and over, indicate whether run on a track or a road. If run on the road, it must be on a certified course or one whose distance is deemed reasonably accurate by the commissioners. Times submitted in road races ending in tenths will be rounded up to the next higher even second. Hand times in the 55m dash will be converted to FAT equivalent by adding 0.24 seconds. Times from longer distance events may not be submitted in order to earn a participation point in a shorter event except those cases which are explicitly allowed under the rules. 2. Relays may be run only on designated relay days and make-up days. A team may run any relay on relay days. 3. Results submitted should be recorded in actual races. A runner may submit a maximum of two results from informal runs, provided another person did the timing. (The following league officials are exempt from the limit on informal runs: Patti Ford, Terry McConnell, and Don Robbins.) A maximum of 4 results from actual races that are not official league events may count towards a runner's individual and team score. Such outside results must be submitted within one month of the date they are run, if run after the draft dinner. If run before the draft dinner, they must be submitted within one month of the draft dinner. Outside times for runners added to the roster after the draft dinner must be submitted within one month of that runner's addition to the roster. 4. An individual may run the same event several times in one year. Only the performance resulting in the most points for that event will count for participation and achievement points. 5. The competition year runs from June 1 through May 31. 6. Captains may add names to their team roster until March 1. They may also drop, without penalty, any runner who has not run any of the officially scheduled events any time before March 1. 7. Those attending the End-'O-Year banquet will pay for the dinner of the person who had the highest rated single performance during the season, provided the person completed runs on at least four official dates. A person who has earned a free dinner will not be eligible for another free dinner for five years. Also, runners whose point total on May 15 exactly equals their age (in years) on May 15 shall be recognized at the banquet. 8. A prize named the "Jerry Bisson Prize" shall be awarded for best team name. 9. If a runner participates in official league events on two different days of the same week, both appearances shall count towards the four required by eligibility rule 4 above. 10. A prize named the "Roger Factor Prize" shall be awarded to the captain or captains of the team having the smallest percentage of runners on reserve as of the end of the competition year. It honors the memory of longtime league member Roger Hahn, and his unique ability to motivate his teammates to participate in league events. Point System Participation Points: Every runner who participates in a race will receive one participation point for his/her team regardless of the time. You may only score one participation point per event. (Exception: runners 85 years old and older earn 2 points per event for participation in non-relay events.) Achievement Points: Additional points may be earned in each event by equaling or bettering the standard in the appropriate category found in the scoring table.
